Dress Code

Minimum Dress Standards

Students at Rancho Alamitos High School shall present themselves in a manner conducive to study and educational advancement. A student’s personal grooming and dress should be neat, clean, and appropriate for the demands of the activities in which the student is participating. Parents should assist students in the selection and wear of appropriate school apparel.

The dress and grooming of students should:

  • Cause neither actual distraction nor disturbance to a school activity.
  • Create neither a health nor a safety hazard to themselves or others.

Students must wear clothing that appropriately covers the student’s body. The clothing items must be opaque.  If translucent or see-through items are worn, an additional layer that is opaque must be worn.  The items must cover undergarments and all private areas.  This means that a student must wear the following items, at all times:

  • Top (shirt, blouse, sweatshirt, etc.).
  • Bottom (pants, shorts, skirt, etc.). A student may wear a “one piece” item such as a dress, jumper, or romper.
  • Footwear (appropriate to the activity).

The dress and grooming standards that follow are intended to define appropriate school apparel and acceptable personal grooming.  This list is not exhaustive, but is a guide to assist students in making informed and positive choices.

  • Footwear shall be worn at all times on the campus. Reflecting a concern for safety, footwear should correspond with the demands and attributes of the activity in which the student participates.
  • Hats and headwear are permitted providing the student’s face is always visible. Hats or headwear may not interfere with the sight of any students or staff. Additionally, during class instruction, teachers may direct students to remove hats and headwear at any time (cultural or religious items exempt).
  • Apparel or accessories shall not contain any obscene or offensive logos, graphics, or hand-written wording depicting drugs, illicit substances, alcoholic beverages, sexually suggestive topics, or references to violence and/or weapons.
  • Apparel or accessories shall not contain anything that may demonstrate hate group association/affiliation and/or use hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation, or other protected groups.
  • Apparel, accessories, and head coverings, including hats and caps, shall not be permitted when such apparel is associated with or reflects gang affiliation or gang identity (as identified by school, local law enforcement and/or other community agencies) currently considered to be gang related virtue of its colors, trademarks, or other design arrangement.
